Can you have an annual gynaecology check and ultrasound without symptoms?

In England, prevention centres on defined screening programmes and individual risk. An annual examination plus a scan of everything is not a single mandatory NHS package for every woman. Without symptoms, first establish which checks are due and what each additional test would change.

Check screening invitations

Ask your GP practice about your last cervical screening and next invitation. England's routine programme covers people with a cervix aged 25–64; after a relevant negative HPV result, the standard interval is five years. Certain results require earlier follow-up. NHS: cervical screening invitations ↗.

This checks the cervix rather than every pelvic organ. It does not replace assessment of new symptoms or automatically establish a need for annual ultrasound.

Discuss personal risks with your GP

Disclose family cancer history, previous abnormal results, operations, chronic conditions and medicines. Prepare questions about contraception, menopause or pregnancy planning. A targeted review or specialist assessment may be more suitable than a general package.

Unusual bleeding, persistent pain, discharge changes or new symptoms require an appointment now. Do not wait for an annual review or another screening invitation.

Assess a private package before paying

Request the procedure list and the purpose of each item. Ask what each test detects, what it cannot exclude, the possibility of incidental findings and who arranges further investigation. Screening can bring benefits and unnecessary follow-on tests. NHS: screening benefits and limitations ↗.

Check whether medical consultation, interpretation, follow-up and a GP letter are included. A longer test list does not demonstrate better prevention.

Obtain a clear plan

Keep records of checks, reasoned recommendations and the next review date. A new symptom needs its own plan despite a previously normal check-up. A normal result concerns a particular test and time, rather than guaranteeing absence of all disease.

Follow local screening invitations and rules in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. After moving, supply previous results: dates and methods help prevent both missed checks and unnecessary duplication.
