Start with the purpose: conversation with peers, reading and writing, cultural activities or examination preparation. A child who understands Russian but rarely speaks it and a confident reader need different groups. The label Russian school does not itself describe the curriculum.

Match the programme to your child

Shortlist options with a manageable journey and find each provider's official website. Ask about group ages, numbers, lesson length, the approach to bilingual learners and homework. Request a sample lesson and an explanation of level assessment.

For examination preparation, confirm the qualification, exam board, exam registration and what the fee includes. A promise of a British certificate is insufficient detail. Obtain a written description of the learning outcome.

Check how the setting operates

A weekend language school is usually a supplementary or out-of-school setting. DfE guidance on extracurricular activities includes language and cultural schools. Do not assume every club receives the same inspections as a full-time school. DfE: using clubs and tuition ↗.

Ask about the safeguarding lead, staff checks, complaints and collection arrangements. Discuss first aid, allergies, toilets and late collection. Agree separately on taking photographs and publishing children's images.

Try a lesson

Before paying for a term, ask whether a trial is available and what it costs. Observe whether your child understands tasks, feels comfortable with the group and has time to interact. Afterwards, ask what they enjoyed and found unclear.

Test the actual weekend journey: an hour each way may make an otherwise suitable programme impractical. Photographs of performances alone are not a basis for choosing.

Check fees and workload

Obtain the full termly cost, including registration, books, examinations, performances and optional clubs. Check missed-lesson, refund and notice terms and possible timetable changes. Compare the actual number of sessions and conditions rather than only the hourly price.

Weekend classes supplement mainstream education. Reading and conversation at home can also maintain the home language; Bell Foundation guidance for EAL families suggests this approach. Bell Foundation: helping your child learn ↗. Agree a clear, manageable goal for the term with the teacher.
