An adult who does not know Russian needs Russian as a Foreign Language provision. School literature, native-speaker exam preparation and support for bilingual children begin from different assumptions. Specify adult age, first language, experience and goals when searching.
If the learner understands family speech but cannot read, explain this separately. Starting entirely from scratch is not automatic, but strong conversation does not establish writing skills. Request assessment of both speech and reading.
London starting points
The Russian Language Centre ↗ lists classroom and online groups, beginner and continuing levels, and individual tuition. King’s Language Centre ↗ provides another starting point for checking Russian courses. Read the actual intake conditions and availability to outside learners.
Ask how placement works, what language is used for explanations and how much time is spent communicating. A Russian-speaking teacher does not automatically know how to explain cases and verbal aspect to an adult foreign learner; relevant teaching experience matters.
Use a trial lesson
A useful introduction combines understandable everyday tasks, pronunciation, reading and gradual grammar. Ask how Cyrillic is introduced, whether transliteration and books are used and what independent tasks are expected. Translate “talking with family” into actual situations rather than studying tables alone.
For individual teaching, agree frequency, homework feedback and flexibility over topics. If a partner already speaks Russian, they should avoid answering continually for the learner, who needs independent practice.
Costs and progression
Compare total fees, hours, group size, materials and rescheduling. Check expiry and cancellation for private lesson packages. If an examination is required, choose according to the receiving organisation’s conditions; the school’s internal certificate may serve a different purpose.
After several weeks, assess a specific skill such as introducing yourself, making a simple request or writing a short message. Discuss progression and establish that the next appropriate level is available at a workable time.
