Choose for contents and access

List belongings and measure large furniture. Leave an aisle if you need regular access; maximum packing density is not always practical. Ask about height, shape, floor, lifts and distance from the vehicle to the unit.

SSA UK provides customer information ↗. Compare individual sites and contracts rather than only chain advertising. A distant cheap unit can cost more through repeated journeys.

Calculate the whole stay

Establish whether billing is weekly, four-weekly or monthly. Introductory discounts may end before your stay does. Include VAT, locks, contents protection, transport and possible increases.

Ask about minimum terms and departure notice. Safestore's FAQs ↗ illustrate provider-specific notice and documentation requirements. One operator's rules are not universal.

Cover and responsibility

Building insurance does not automatically protect your possessions. SSA UK explains separate contents cover ↗. Check replacement values, exclusions, excesses and claims procedures. Confirm any home-policy extension with the insurer.

Some operators offer enhanced liability rather than an insurance policy. Establish its form and limits instead of treating the two as identical. Prepare an inventory and photographs of valuable goods.

Packing and departure

Read prohibited-item conditions, including food, hazardous liquids and flammables. Pack clean dry goods, label boxes and protect furniture appropriately. Closing a unit does not remove moisture already inside damp belongings.

Confirm actual access hours rather than reception hours. Check lift dimensions and trolley availability. Give notice through the required channel, empty the unit completely and obtain contract-closure confirmation. Retain the final bill so charges do not continue after your belongings leave.
