Identify what is offered

SMAS lifting advertising may describe HIFU, or focused ultrasound. This differs from surgical lifting involving tissue intervention. Ask for the actual technology and device model.

Explain your concern and request assessment of whether the expected change is realistic. Surgical before-and-after images cannot establish an equivalent device result. Discuss alternatives and no treatment.

Check the practitioner

Ask about device training, anatomical knowledge, experience, insurance and complication support. NHS recommends preparing questions before cosmetic treatment ↗. Consultation should explain risk rather than merely sell treatment lines.

Disclose surgery, fillers, implants, conditions and medicines. Ask which areas are excluded and why. Do not select depth or settings from social-media instructions.

Risk and regulation

Discuss pain, burns, sensation changes, unintended tissue changes and when to seek help. No incision does not mean no risk. Obtain recovery instructions and a complication contact.

DHSC announced development of new rules in August 2025 ↗. Reform plans should not be presented as an already operating universal licence. Check current local requirements and the practitioner's actual professional registration.

Compare cost and results

Establish area boundaries, duration, consultation and review charges. Pulse or line counts alone cannot demonstrate quality. Ask when change is expected and how photographs will be compared. Do not prepay repeat treatment before understanding the first outcome and whether another intervention is appropriate.
