Choosing coffee beans or ground coffee in the UK

Start with your brewing equipment

Identify whether you use an espresso machine, filter, cafetière or another method. Without a grinder, choose a suitable grind rather than simply an attractive wholebean bag. An unsuitable grind can make brewing difficult even with good coffee.

Tell the seller your equipment and preferences: milk or black, softer flavours, chocolate notes or pronounced fruit acidity. Flavour descriptions help narrow the choice, but do not mean everyone will enjoy the same roast.

Explore a range

Union Coffee organises collections ↗ by brewing method and flavour. Its subscription options ↗ show wholebean and grind choices. This is one British roaster to compare rather than an independent ranking of all suppliers.

Start with a small bag. As an example checked on 7 October 2026, House Roast is shown at £7.95 for 200g before delivery and the selected purchase conditions. Compare prices per kilogram: 200g, 250g and 1kg packs can look misleading when judged only by packet price.

Check freshness and consumption

Ask about roast date or batch information, the seller's guidance and storage after opening. Avoid buying a large quantity solely for a discount if your consumption is low. Follow storage instructions and keep it away from heat.

Begin with the roaster's brewing recipe or appliance guidance. Change one variable at a time so you can identify what affects the result. If the flavour disappoints, check grind and recipe before judging the entire brand.

Manage a subscription

Check pack size, shipping, recurring total, frequency and amendment deadlines. Different plans from one seller may have different conditions. Establish whether you select the coffee or receive a changing selection, and whether decaf is included.

Measure your weekly consumption first. Note the next charge and how to pause before travelling. A gift subscription should suit the recipient's equipment and avoid unexpected payments; confirm how and when it ends.
