How early should I arrive at Stansted Airport?

Start with the airline's deadlines

You need the flight time, number, airline, baggage arrangements and required airport procedures. Check four separate times in your booking: when check-in opens and closes, when bag drop closes, and when the boarding gate closes. A 07:00 departure does not mean that a suitcase can still be checked at 06:50.

On its official check-in page ↗, Stansted recommends having your boarding pass validated before security at least two hours before scheduled departure. This is a target for reaching the security entrance, so arriving at the car park exactly two hours beforehand may leave insufficient time for earlier steps.

Allow additional time before security with checked bags

The airport lists different desk opening times for different airlines and services. Confirm yours with the airline, particularly for an early flight. Online check-in does not remove the need to drop checked baggage or complete any required document check.

Include the walk from your coach, train or parking facility, finding the desk and queueing. Discuss procedures beforehand if travelling with children, unusual baggage or assistance requirements. Do not assume that paid fast-track security accelerates document checks or extends bag-drop deadlines.

Travelling with cabin baggage only

If you have a boarding pass and have met the airline's requirements, you can proceed towards security. First check whether a desk document check is still required. Confirm that a mobile boarding pass is accepted for your route, save it offline and keep your documents ready.

Travel time and disruption buffers

Plan your journey for the actual date, especially overnight, at weekends and on holidays. Include waiting and walking time, not just the coach or train's advertised journey duration. For an important early departure, compare travelling overnight with staying near the airport.

Someone else's twenty-minute journey through security does not predict your queue. Check airport and airline notices on travel day. If the flight is delayed, do not independently postpone check-in unless the airline confirms revised instructions.
