Examine healed work

Choose a style and request healed examples on similar body areas and skin tones. A fresh bright photograph cannot show line retention months later. Discuss how size, movement and ageing affect the design.

Agree the drawing, lettering and placement separately. Check spelling yourself before starting. An artist need not copy someone else's work; discuss an original approach and rights to supplied artwork.

Check premises and equipment

GOV.UK describes tattoo registration ↗. In London, check the borough's special-treatment arrangements, address and practitioner. A visiting popular artist still needs appropriate conditions.

Ask about sterile single-use needles, surface barriers, separate pigment containers, reusable-equipment processing and insurance. Identify ink manufacturer and batch records. Disclose allergies, medicines, scarring tendencies and skin conditions.

Contract and price

Establish hourly or fixed pricing, estimated time, deposit, rescheduling and design changes. Ask whether touch-ups are included and under what conditions. Large projects may need several appointments; a cheap first session cannot establish total cost.

Agree breaks, privacy and permission to publish photographs. Receiving a service does not require agreeing to advertising your body or personal story. Do not attend intoxicated.

Healing and problems

Obtain written care for the actual dressing and method. NHS Norfolk explains tattoos and warning signs ↗. Increasing redness, swelling, pus, pain or illness warrant medical advice. Do not cover problems with another tattoo or improvise household treatment. Keep pigment details for any clinical assessment.
