When should a teenager move to an English school before GCSEs, and how can you assess a private school?

Читать на русскомThere is no universally best age to move before GCSEs. The decision depends on age, English proficiency, subjects already studied and whether a school can accommodate entry at that stage. Obtain a learning plan from prospective schools before choosing the moving date.
Identify the stage of education
In England, KS 3 normally covers Years 7–9 and KS 4 Years 10–11; most GCSEs are taken in Year 11. Moving during KS 4 therefore requires specific discussion of course content already taught. GOV.UK: school year groups ↗, GOV.UK: key stages 3 and 4 ↗.
Send the school the date of birth, reports, subjects studied, English background and planned arrival date. Request written confirmation of Year placement. Neither repeating a year nor joining an identically numbered overseas class should be assumed.
Obtain a subject plan before paying
Ask which GCSEs or other qualifications are available, the exam boards, coursework requirements and what teaching will have been missed by the start date. Discuss English language, maths, science, options and EAL support separately. Request a plan leading to college or sixth form.
The Bell Foundation provides guidance for recently arrived learners aged 15 or over on further education, English and choosing a route. It can help when direct entry into a standard examination class is unsuitable. Bell Foundation: post-16 guidance ↗.
Verify the private school
Independent schools charge fees and can follow their own curriculum. Check registration and the organisation responsible for inspection; obtain its report from the relevant inspectorate, including Ofsted or ISI. An agent's presentation or headline examination results should not determine the choice alone. GOV.UK: private schools ↗.
At a meeting, ask about new arrivals, pastoral care, safeguarding, accommodation where relevant and the actual timetable. Where possible, let your teenager visit and ask their own questions.
Calculate the full cost and commitments
Obtain a written quote including applicable taxes: tuition, EAL, examinations, uniform, meals, trips, boarding and guardian arrangements. Check deposits, refunds, notice periods and withdrawal terms. Consider a consultant's fee separately and ask which schools pay them commission.
State-school applications following a move use in-year admissions; a paid agent does not replace that process. GOV.UK: school applications ↗. Your comparison should produce a workable educational route and backup option rather than a promise of guaranteed GCSE results. This article covers England; other UK countries have their own examination systems. Checked on 7 October 2026.
