Start with a verifiable search

The LTA website ↗ links to its Accredited coach search. Begin with an area you can reach reliably, then check whether the coach teaches adults at your level. A personal recommendation is useful, but current status and terms still need checking.

Your initial enquiry can describe whether you are a beginner or returning player, your goal, available days, preferred teaching language and lesson format. You do not need to buy a large package immediately or send an unfamiliar person a detailed medical history.

Individual or group lessons

One-to-one coaching allows detailed feedback and an individual pace. A group can introduce future playing partners, but ask about numbers and how the coach divides attention. A complete beginner needs a foundations programme rather than an undefined mixed-ability session.

Ask about a trial lesson and borrowing a racket or balls. Request an outline of early lessons: basic strokes, movement, serving, scoring and safe court behaviour.

Coach and court checks

Check current accreditation through the directory, insurance and experience of teaching adults. Establish whether paid coaching is permitted on the selected court: an ordinary court booking does not itself confirm that permission.

Ask about the surface, floodlights, access arrangements and a wet-weather alternative. For outdoor sessions, agree who decides on cancellation and when. Knowing this before paying reduces the chance of a wasted journey.

Compare the full price

Request the charge for a stated lesson length and clarify whether it includes the coach, court, club guest fees, equipment and any coach travel. Check cancellation deadlines, missed lessons and package expiry dates.

After a trial, consider whether the explanation was understandable and whether you received something useful to practise. The right choice fits your level, schedule and budget. Sporting achievements or a well-known name do not replace effective teaching for your particular needs.
