Finding tennis partners and booking London courts

Find someone at a suitable level

Group lessons, open park sessions and local leagues are practical starting points. The LTA guide ↗ links to Barclays Free Park Tennis and Local Tennis Leagues, which match players of a similar standard. Check the individual listing for availability and participation arrangements.

Describe your experience honestly: completely new, able to sustain a rally, or comfortable playing a match. Intermediate means different things to different people. A short practice hit can be a better first meeting than an expected competitive match.

Book the court

The LTA booking instructions ↗ explain searching by place, date and time, then booking through an account; LTA Play is another option. Check the confirmation, address, court number and entry arrangements. Save any access code before leaving home.

Establish whether the park requires a local pass or offers individual bookings. One venue’s rules do not apply across London. Check floodlighting for your chosen time and the exact slot length.

Agree the arrangements first

Decide who books and how you share costs. Confirm balls, rackets, singles or doubles, and what happens if one player cancels. A public sports venue and ordinary contact details are enough for a first meeting with a new partner; do not share identity documents or banking codes.

If using a community, favour open club channels with understandable rules. Do not pay an unknown person for access to an existing booking without checking whether the venue permits it.

Weather, cancellation and continuity

Read the wet-weather refund policy and the deadline for cancelling yourself. Players deciding not to attend does not necessarily entitle them to a refund. Keep evidence if cancellation is processed through a booking system.

After a successful first hit, agree a regular slot. If the level difference is large, try practice drills or find a more suitable group. Reliable opportunities to play usually matter more than an occasional booking at a famous club.
