How to access psychotherapy through health insurance in England

Read your own policy first

Private medical insurance does not mean every psychotherapy service is covered. Check mental health benefits, exclusions, age limits and rules for pre-existing symptoms. Employer and individual policies can differ even with the same insurer.

Bupa describes its mental health treatment route ↗, but those arrangements do not apply to every company. Request confirmation against your specific policy number.

Obtain approval before attending

Ask whether a GP referral is needed or Direct Access is available. Establish who conducts the initial assessment, covered methods and formats, and whether a pre-authorisation code is required.

Record the approved session number or financial limit, approval expiry and extension process. Payment for an initial assessment does not automatically approve a whole course. General claim guidance ↗ illustrates why advance checking matters.

Check the actual therapist

The insurer should confirm the chosen clinician and, where relevant, appointment location. Professional registration and recognition by an insurance network are separate checks. Certain psychologist professions require the HCPC ↗; psychotherapists should be checked against the appropriate professional register.

Clarify Russian-language sessions, in-person care and availability. If the therapist bills the insurer directly, ask which charges could still become your responsibility.

Calculate personal costs

Ask about excess, copayments, session fee caps, outpatient allowance, missed appointments and reports. Some products include special therapy arrangements without the usual excess; obtain individual confirmation rather than assuming this.

Before approval runs out, agree what follows: extension, self-payment or NHS care. England has a separate Talking Therapies route ↗, often accepting self-referrals. Discuss transitions early so that an unexpected bill does not suddenly interrupt important support, and retain written coverage decisions.
