Will a new health insurance policy cover an existing medical condition?

A pre-existing condition can include symptoms, investigation, treatment or medical advice before cover began, as well as a diagnosis. Buying insurance before an already planned investigation does not guarantee payment.
Give the insurer the actual history
Prepare dates of symptoms, appointments, investigations and medicines. Ask in writing whether a particular test or treatment is covered with that history. A statement that the policy covers the specialty is insufficient: personalised exclusions matter.
Keep questionnaires and your answers. Answer questions accurately, including about symptoms without a final diagnosis. If uncertain, ask the insurer what information must be disclosed. Bupa: pre-existing conditions ↗.
Understand underwriting
Full medical underwriting assesses history before cover starts and records applicable exclusions. With moratorium underwriting, detailed checks may take place when you claim. No initial medical questionnaire does not mean there are no exclusions.
Some moratorium terms allow later cover after a specified uninterrupted period without symptoms, treatment or advice. Duration, look-back periods and the interpretation of related conditions depend on the contract. Bupa's two-year example is not a universal rule for every insurer. Bupa: underwriting types ↗.
Check employer schemes separately
An employer scheme may use medical history disregarded or different terms. Obtain confirmation from the insurer about your own and dependants' cover, start dates, waiting periods and limits on chronic care.
Chronic and pre-existing are not synonyms. Even a newly developed chronic condition may face restrictions on ongoing management, while initial diagnosis is treated differently.
Do not interrupt care to qualify
Do not postpone necessary treatment or conceal symptoms to complete a moratorium. Continue agreed care through the NHS or self-pay if insurance cover is unconfirmed.
Before switching, obtain transfer and continuity terms in writing before cancelling existing cover. If a claim is refused, request the exact contractual clause, medical reasoning and complaints procedure. Compare more than premiums: losing existing cover may outweigh a saving.
