List your needs: wages, bill Direct Debits, cash, international transfers, branch support and joint access. A current account, basic bank account and e-money wallet may look similar in an app but have different terms and protection. Compare the legal provider and actual product rather than the brand alone.
If a standard current account is unavailable, ask about a basic bank account. MoneyHelper describes its features ↗: everyday payments without an overdraft; the basic account itself is normally free, while currency and special transactions can cost extra. This does not promise approval from every bank.
Check documents before applying
Read the chosen bank's official list for your circumstances. Prepare identification, your current address, contact information and any requested tax-residence details. An online application may require a selfie and clear document image. Your name and address should be consistent across the application and supporting evidence.
If you have no utility bill yet, do not fabricate evidence or use somebody else's residential address. MoneyHelper lists possible alternatives ↗, but confirm acceptance with the particular bank, for example an appropriate employer, educational or government letter. Ask about a newly arrived customer's procedure or branch verification.
Compare charges and practical access
Check monthly fees, cash and transfer limits, currency conversion, international receipts and extra services. Separately confirm acceptance of your intended currencies and transfers from the particular country. An offered overdraft is borrowing with separate terms; do not accept it merely because it appears in the package.
Compare everyday usability: branches, support without the app, lost-phone recovery, card delivery and paper statements. For a substantial balance, separately establish the applicable protection; a sort code alone does not explain whether the provider is a bank or e-money institution.
After applying and if refused
Keep the confirmation, monitor document requests and reply through official channels. A bank may carry out checks and request source-of-funds evidence. If refused, ask for the reason and about a basic account; a provider may be unable to disclose every reason. Use its complaints process for an error.
After opening, verify the account details, access, card and conditions before moving your main balance. Enable notifications, retain the official recovery route and keep your address and phone updated. Do not give passwords, PINs or one-time codes to somebody offering to open an account or accelerate checks.
