Check every country on the route

List destinations and transit countries and decide how you will cross the Channel. Check passenger entry and vehicle rules separately. A person’s visa or travel entitlement does not establish permission to take a rental car across a border.

Start with GOV.UK driving-abroad guidance ↗. For a UK licence, IDP requirements depend on the document and country. If another country issued your licence, check recognition of that document; a British address does not turn it into a UK licence.

Vehicle documents

For your own car, prepare the V5C and insurance certificate. For a hired or leased vehicle, arrange overseas permission and the necessary VE103. Check the supplying company’s permitted countries, ferry rules, fees and overseas assistance.

Establish whether a UK identifier is required for your registration and destination. Carry documents in the form accepted by authorities and operators; a phone photograph does not always replace an original. Check validity through the return date.

Insurance and road rules

GOV.UK ↗ explains checking insurance territory, cover and country-specific proof requirements. Do not assume your normal comprehensive protection remains identical abroad. Check permitted trip length and breakdown assistance separately.

Review local equipment, lighting, winter-tyre, toll and emissions-zone requirements. A sticker or registration may need advance arrangements. French rules should not be applied automatically to Germany or another European country.

Booking and practical preparation

Confirm vehicle dimensions, roof loads, trailers, pets and carrier check-in procedures. Allow for controls and queues. Compare fuel, tolls, parking, accommodation and insurance supplements as well as the crossing fare.

Plan rest stops and a fallback for delays. With children, check local restraint requirements. Save insurance, roadside-assistance details and documents offline.

Recheck restrictions and customs rules before departure. Prepare passengers, driver and vehicle separately rather than assuming one permission covers the entire journey.
