Registering a civil marriage in England

This sequence concerns England; GOV.UK's guidance also covers Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland have separate procedures. First choose a register office or approved venue and confirm registrar availability. A symbolic ceremony alone does not create a registered marriage.
Check age, prohibited relationships and the ending of any previous marriage. Then establish the immigration basis. Standard Visitor permission is not suitable for giving notice or marrying ↗. Travelling solely for a wedding and intending to live in the UK afterwards may require different routes. Marriage itself does not grant permission to remain or work.
Book notice well in advance
Notice must be given at least 29 days before the ceremony ↗, and the ceremony must occur within 12 months. Normally, you must have lived in the relevant registration district for seven days before giving notice. The final venue is specified in advance, so it is not an optional detail.
Some couples involving foreign nationals must attend together. The procedure also depends on status, including EUSS permission. Check your particular combination with the register office. If a case is referred to the Home Office, the checking period can reach 70 days; allow time before paying for a non-refundable celebration.
Prepare original documents
GOV.UK lists the evidence ↗: passport, address, venue details, name changes, the ending of previous marriages and, where applicable, photographs and immigration status. Non-English documents require translation.
An overseas divorce may need GRO assessment and an additional fee. Ask the register office about document format and translation beforehand; do not expect to resolve inconsistent surnames during the appointment. If an interpreter is needed for notice or the ceremony, agree their attendance and whether the proposed person is acceptable.
Obtain a complete quotation and the certificate
Budget separately for each person's notice, ceremony and venue, registrar attendance, certificates, translations and foreign-document assessment. GOV.UK gives basic registrar charges ↗, but approved-venue and council-package prices vary. Request a full quotation for your date, including cancellation conditions.
A civil ceremony requires at least two witnesses and a registrar; religious content is restricted. After the marriage schedule is signed, the register office records it and issues the certificate. Confirm delivery arrangements and timing, especially before a passport change or immigration application. Check names and dates before signing: correcting a registered error after the wedding is a separate process.
