Changing your surname after marriage in the UK

You can continue using your previous surname after marrying. If you choose your spouse's surname, identity documents and organisations' records need separate updates. A British certificate records the marriage; the absence of a field headed “new surname” does not make it unsuitable as evidence.
GOV.UK states that taking a spouse's surname does not require a deed poll ↗. Record-holders can be given the marriage or civil partnership certificate. Different name choices, complicated combinations and a child's name change may involve other requirements; check the process before purchasing a deed poll.
Coordinate with your passport country's rules
If you hold a foreign passport, British practice does not require your country of nationality to change it in the same way. Check its official consular instructions for registration, translation, apostille and replacement of other national documents. Updating a bank record does not extend passport validity under foreign law.
For a British passport, HM Passport Office accepts a marriage certificate ↗, including for the relevant double-barrelled surname. If you hold several nationalities, check name consistency beforehand: the evidence should explain the complete chain.
Update records using a personal checklist
List your passport, UKVI, employer and payroll, HMRC, banks, driving licence, NHS/GP, insurers, tenancy and utility accounts. Every organisation has its own submission process and original-or-copy requirements. Check them rather than sending your only original to several recipients at once.
For an eVisa, use the UKVI account update service ↗. A suitable identity document is needed for a name update; the instructions provide a different process if you do not yet have one. The ordinary service restricts name and passport changes while a visa application awaits a decision. Do not create a new UKVI account instead of updating the existing one.
Plan travel around consistent documents
The booking name must match the passport used for travel. Before replacement, establish which passport will remain valid for departure and return, and check visas. A marriage certificate links identities but does not restore an invalidated passport.
If travel is imminent, first agree the sequence with the passport authority and carrier. Retain scans of previous documents and update acknowledgements. After replacement, check the name and passport number in UKVI and insurance records. Correcting an error before check-in is easier than explaining three inconsistent records at the airport.
