Choosing a UK mobile network and tariff

Check coverage first

A cheap tariff is of little use if it fails at home. Compare home, work and regular routes with Ofcom's coverage checker ↗. A map is a prediction rather than a room-by-room promise; walls, floor level and device affect experience.

Where practical, try a short plan before a long commitment. For a virtual operator, identify the host network and the actual tariff's conditions. Shared infrastructure does not establish identical features, support or speed restrictions.

Calculate the full commitment

Compare SIM-only separately from handset agreements. Add upfront payment, all monthly amounts over the minimum term, stated price changes and out-of-bundle costs. A cheap first month does not establish overall value.

Check data, tethering, international calls and roaming. Unlimited allowances may still have fair-use or feature restrictions. Ask about Wi-Fi calling and device compatibility if indoor reception is poor.

Keeping your number

Ofcom explains Text to Switch ↗. To retain a number, text PAC to 65075 and give the resulting code to the new provider. STAC to 75075 is used when you do not want to retain it. Accounts with multiple numbers may need another request channel.

Check remaining commitment and early-exit charges first. Do not independently close the number before a transfer you want to preserve. Choose a day when temporary SMS disruption will not prevent an essential payment or journey.

After activation

Test calls, texts, data and account access. Set spending controls, alerts and premium-service restrictions where useful. Keep purchase terms and the minimum-term end date.

Maintain a number used for banking and account recovery according to operator rules. When changing it, update recovery methods across services. Choose using your locations and consumption rather than a friend's experience in another neighbourhood.
