Identify the work you want and the training required by actual vacancies. Then compare Skills for Careers training options ↗, including vocational qualifications, Free Courses for Jobs, Skills Bootcamps and apprenticeships. These are distinct routes in England; Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own provision.
A short attendance certificate does not necessarily replace an industry qualification or required professional registration. Ask for the full award title and awarding organisation.
Understand the formats
Skills Bootcamps ↗ provide short training for adults aged 19 and over, generally lasting up to 16 weeks, with programme-specific conditions. Not every bootcamp awards a formal qualification. An interview opportunity after completion is not a guaranteed job; employed and self-employed applicants should check the relevant programme outcome.
An apprenticeship is paid employment with training, so employer recruitment is part of the process. A college vocational course may take longer and include exams, practical work or a placement. Compare outcomes rather than duration alone.
Check funding personally
Conditions can depend on age, residence, immigration status, income, previous qualifications and the funding area. In London, consult the GLA’s 2026–27 rules ↗. This year has its own Level 3 offer, so older national advice may not describe local access.
Send the funding team your circumstances and obtain written confirmation before entering a paid agreement. Ask what evidence is required and whether previous higher education matters. NRPF should not automatically be treated as a ban on all education funding: the applicable eligibility conditions require a separate assessment.
Before enrolling
Ask about the timetable, compulsory attendance, equipment, materials, examinations, placements, travel and childcare. If offered a loan, establish repayment rules; this differs from fully funded tuition. Check withdrawal terms and any resit charges.
Confirm that the link belongs to the college or an official delivery provider. Do not pay an intermediary merely to “guarantee a free place” before the provider decides. Keep your enrolment confirmation and a specific plan for the next career step.
