Define the skill you want

Art, illustration and graphic design overlap but solve different problems. Book illustration involves storytelling and text; commercial images require briefs, deadlines and file delivery; an independent art project needs development of your practice. Choose an outcome you can show after training.

If uncertain about the direction, start with a small course and independent tasks. This tests your interest before committing to several years and substantial expense. Check whether the particular group accepts complete beginners.

Compare actual provision

UAL’s illustration short courses ↗ cover areas such as character drawing, books and digital practice in different formats. They can introduce the discipline or support portfolio development, but a short course is not a BA or MA degree.

Morley College ↗ offers another route through introductory work, developing an existing practice and art preparation programmes. Compare the individual syllabus rather than the institution’s name alone. Campus, intake and tutor can affect delivery and materials.

Plan a portfolio with a purpose

Read the intended university’s portfolio requirements before choosing preparation classes. Check the number of pieces, media, research, sketchbooks and process explanations required. Useful preparation develops your own decisions; a set of identical copied exercises says little about your thinking.

For professional work, develop several completed projects from realistic briefs, show alternatives and explain choices. Ask whether teaching includes individual critique, presentation and professional practice. Assess employment promises against their actual conditions.

Budget and enrol

Request a materials list, device and software requirements, and likely printing, travel and exhibition costs. Avoid buying a professional tablet before confirming what is needed. For longer programmes, separately check fee status, funding, workload and deposit terms.

Save the syllabus and cancellation policy. During a short trial course, evaluate how useful the feedback is and whether you can work between sessions. Choose the next stage to address a specific gap in your skills.
