Distinguish UX from UI

UX involves understanding people’s tasks, research and testing solutions. UI concerns interfaces, visual hierarchy and interactions. Jobs may combine them, but learning a graphics tool alone does not cover the process. Read several relevant vacancies and list the skills they require.

Try a small project first: identify a real problem, speak with potential users, define the task, build a simple prototype and test it. This reveals whether you enjoy research as well as attractive screens.

Compare learning formats

A short course introduces methods; a longer programme may provide sustained practice and portfolio work. For example, UAL offers a UX short course ↗. Check current pages and intake dates: university course names change, and older reviews may describe closed provision.

Recorded online lessons, live teaching, intensives and degrees require different commitments. Ask how much independent project work is expected and whether you can discuss decisions with a tutor. A well-known brand does not automatically provide individual support.

Inspect the syllabus

Look for problem definition, research methods, analysis, information architecture, prototyping, usability testing and accessibility. For UI, check typography, components, interface states, responsive behaviour and developer handover. Ask how AI tools are used and independent work assessed.

Review graduate case studies for constraints and decisions changed after testing. A template redesign without research reveals less about the process. Establish whether you may publish group or client projects and how to describe your individual contribution.

Check costs and employment claims

Compare the complete fee, subscriptions, equipment, mentoring, assessments and refunds. Request contractual terms for any job guarantee: qualifying roles, residence requirements, application targets and refund conditions.

Do not rely on employment percentages without a reporting period, sample and definition of success. Training does not remove the need for independent projects, job searching and explaining your earlier experience. Start with a manageable format, then invest in a specific missing skill.
