Bring treatment information

Register with a GP after moving and explain how much medicine remains. Bring inhalers or packaging photographs showing the name, ingredient, strength and device. Include medical summaries, breathing-test results and your previous asthma action plan.

Device colour does not establish interchangeability. Inhalers differ in ingredients and technique. Ask which UK product is appropriate and request a demonstration of the actual device.

Obtaining a prescription

Salbutamol inhalers are prescription medicines, as NHS information confirms ↗. Your GP reviews the history and accepts responsibility for prescribing. Overseas packaging helps but does not automatically create a repeat prescription.

Ask who will arrange your asthma review, which medicines will be regular and how to reorder. If you unexpectedly run out, use the NHS emergency prescription route ↗ or speak to a pharmacist. Emergency supply depends on the circumstances and does not replace assessment.

What to cover at an asthma review

Demonstrate inhaler technique and describe night symptoms, exercise limitations, attacks and how often extra medicine is needed. The NHS explains current treatment approaches ↗, including different inhaler regimens.

Obtain a written individual plan specifying everyday treatment, actions during deterioration and when to seek emergency care. Check whether a spacer is needed and whether it fits. Do not apply another person's instructions to your device or stop preventer treatment independently.

During an attack

Follow your own action plan. Call 999 if you deteriorate, have no inhaler or do not improve after the emergency treatment specified in your plan. Do not wait for a pharmacy prescription while struggling to breathe.

An attack still needs urgent medical review even if you recover. Arrange the next review and allow time for repeat orders: delivery, prescription approval and availability of the correct device do not always happen on the same day.
