Choose cookware for your hob, usual meals and storage. A large set may look economical while several unsuitable sizes remain unused. Start with the pieces you rely on most often.

Match the hob

Check the hob type and its instructions. Induction requires compatible base construction; appearance or a general metal name is not enough. The John Lewis cookware guide describes compatible bases ↗. Confirm the cookware manufacturer's marking and suitable dimensions for your cooking surface.

If a pan will go into an oven, check temperature restrictions for handles, lids and coatings separately. A permission applying to the body does not necessarily cover every component.

Assess size and handling

List portion requirements and measure useful cooking area. The diameter at the rim may differ from the base diameter. For a frying pan, consider usable surface, side height and lifting it with food inside.

In a shop, hold the empty item and assess handles and lid. Consider washing it in your sink and storing it in the cupboard. A large, heavy piece can be inconvenient for everyday use even if you like the material.

Compare maintenance requirements

Read the particular product's heating, utensil, washing, drying and any surface-maintenance requirements. Stainless steel, cast iron and different coatings should not all be treated identically.

Establish whether dishwasher use is allowed and what restrictions remain. For a specialist coating, find the manufacturer's advice on damage and replacement. Do not transfer one brand's instructions to every superficially similar pan.

Set or individual pieces

Add the prices of genuinely useful sizes, including lids and delivery. Inspect each component of a set: a “five-piece” description may count lids rather than five separate pans. Individual purchases may fit a small kitchen better.

Read preparation instructions, the guarantee and return position before using new cookware. Keep the model details and care information. Good value means covering your usual cooking tasks with maintenance you can actually follow. A high item count and promises of professional results do not establish that on their own.
