Language exchanges, conversation classes, professional networking and general social events require different participation. Exchanges may divide time between languages. Classes usually have teaching or structure. Professional events focus on work rather than correcting grammar.
A small task-based group can be easier initially. Tell the organiser you want English practice and ask whether your level fits. Native-speaker attendance does not mean those people will act as teachers.
Find and verify an event
Meetup lists London conversation events ↗. Open the individual listing for date, venue, host, booking rules and feedback. A history of past sessions does not confirm a future meeting.
Public-library activities ↗ can offer a calmer alternative. Pick an interesting subject; discussing a book or completing a shared task creates conversational context.
Preparation and costs
Check organiser fees, compulsory venue purchases, subscriptions and cancellation. A free RSVP need not make the whole evening free. For professional networking, establish the audience and whether the event primarily sells services.
Prepare a brief introduction, two questions and a clarification phrase such as “Could you say that another way?” Notes can help without turning conversation into an examination. Check time zone and joining link for online meetings.
Afterwards
Assess how much you spoke, whether you could hear others and whether you want to return. Registration numbers do not equal useful conversation time. A small recurring group may work better than a large noisy event.
Exchange contacts by mutual choice and avoid adding people to groups without agreement. Try several visits when the format suits you. Social practice complements learning without automatically promising a particular English level.
