How to choose a UK IVF clinic and assess its success rates

Check licensing and practical arrangements
Find the exact clinic in the HFEA clinic search ↗. Review inspection information, treatments, patient ratings and location. Establish where scans, egg collection, laboratory work and embryo transfer happen: a network may use different sites.
Ask about weekend access, emergency contact, counselling and experience with your cause of infertility. Repeated-visit logistics may matter more than small differences in advertised figures.
Compare like-for-like outcomes
Distinguish pregnancy from live birth, results per egg collection from per embryo transferred, own from donor eggs, and fresh from frozen transfers. Compare your age group and consider reliability ranges. Patient mix affects results, and small samples are particularly unstable. HFEA: understanding clinic data ↗.
Request an individual estimate with its uncertainties rather than a success guarantee. Disclose previous cycles and procedures.
Establish funding and total costs
For NHS care, start with your GP and the current local fertility policy. Eligibility and funding vary; general NHS entitlement does not guarantee a funded IVF cycle. HFEA: IVF ↗.
For self-pay, obtain an itemised plan covering consultation, tests, medicines, monitoring, collection, fertilisation, transfer, freezing, storage and later frozen transfers. Check cancellation, poor response, no embryos and refund-package terms. Do not compare the price of one procedure with a complete cycle.
Scrutinise add-ons and safety planning
For each additional test or method, ask why it is appropriate for you, its evidence, risks and separate price. Check current HFEA add-on ratings ↗; a more expensive package does not establish a better outcome.
Obtain instructions for stimulation complications and a clear emergency contact. Do not adjust doses yourself. Before paying, discuss counselling, consent, future decisions about embryos and records transfer to your GP. Decide after receiving a written plan and time to consider it.
