Passport replacement and travel after a name change

Start with the passport-issuing authority

There is no single British replacement deadline covering every foreign passport after marriage. Validity depends on the issuing country's rules and the circumstances of the name change. Do not automatically assume the passport remains valid until its printed expiry date, or that it becomes invalid on the wedding day.

Find your country's current consular instructions. Ask what event starts any deadline, which name-change evidence is accepted, whether domestic documents must be changed first and what happens to your existing passport when applying. Disclose planned travel before handing documents over.

Choose the timing for a British passport

HM Passport Office allows a passport in a married name before or after the ceremony ↗. An application up to three months beforehand produces a post-dated passport, which cannot be used before the ceremony; the previous passport is cancelled. Some countries will not issue visas in a post-dated document.

If retaining your previous surname, do not change a booking merely because of the wedding. If replacing the passport, allow for processing, return of supporting evidence and any new visas. Faster services are not available for every case; check their eligibility separately.

Reconcile bookings and travel permissions

Your booking name must match the valid passport used for travel. Check visas, electronic authorisations and carrier records: permission may be linked to the old passport number. The destination determines whether a visa in a cancelled passport can still be used; a marriage certificate does not guarantee boarding.

Make a table of each document, name, number, expiry and required action. Check every part of the itinerary, including transit. Changing a surname and transferring a visa may be separate procedures. Ask the carrier to confirm its amendment process and cost before purchasing another ticket.

Update the British immigration account

For return travel using an eVisa, the passport must be correctly linked to your UKVI account ↗. Updating its number and your name is not a new visa extension. Check the result before leaving and retain access to the phone or email used to sign in.

While a visa decision is pending, the ordinary service restricts passport and name updates; follow UKVI's help procedure. A passport lost or stolen abroad involves separate replacement and return-travel instructions ↗.

Carry the name-change certificate and previous passport where the route's rules call for them. They help connect identities but do not replace a valid travel document. Do not plan to return on an old passport without checking its legal validity and connection to your immigration permission.
