What pelvic health physiotherapy addresses

It provides specialist help for certain bladder and bowel problems, prolapse, pelvic pain and recovery after birth or surgery. Treatment depends on the cause; a universal instruction to do more Kegels does not replace assessment.

The Chelsea and Westminster service ↗ describes its scope. Start with a GP, midwife or treating team for new or unexplained symptoms to identify the appropriate route.

NHS access in London

Rules differ by borough and trust. Chelsea and Westminster, for example, requires referral for individual outpatient care; self-referral to a pregnancy advice class does not mean unrestricted access to every appointment.

Lewisham and Greenwich ↗ has self-referral with its own age and GP-registration criteria. Check catchment, condition and appointment type on your service's page. Do not use another area's form merely because it is online.

Private care and the first assessment

Check the physiotherapist with the HCPC ↗ and ask about additional pelvic-health training. Clarify relevant experience, language, assessment and follow-up fees, and any equipment costs.

Prepare symptoms, a bladder or bowel diary if requested, birth and operation history and medicines. An internal examination may be offered when needed and requires consent. Ask about its purpose, alternatives, a chaperone and stopping the examination.

The plan and urgent warning signs

You should understand home actions, goals, review timing and how to report deterioration. Do not buy a training device before suitability is checked. Discuss exercises that increase pain rather than simply doing more.

New urinary retention, saddle-area numbness or bladder and bowel-control changes with back pain require emergency assessment: the NHS describes these signs ↗. Use 111 for other urgent uncertainty. Routine physiotherapy must not delay evaluation of dangerous symptoms.
