Applying for a new Schengen visa before the current one expires

First decide whether you need another visa

Read the current sticker: territorial coverage, expiry, number of entries and permitted days. If it fully covers the next trip and you have sufficient remaining short-stay allowance, another visa may be unnecessary. MULT does not let you disregard expiry or the 90/180 rule.

List upcoming journeys with exact entry and departure dates. Separately record days already used. A new document does not itself reset previous short stays.

Applying before expiry is generally possible

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressly permits an application before the current visa expires ↗ where it cannot be used for the next planned trip. Under the process described, the existing visa need not be cancelled beforehand and the new one becomes valid when the current one expires.

This does not promise two visas with simultaneous validity. Identify the competent consulate for your genuine new itinerary; it is not necessarily the country that issued the previous visa. Observe the current application window and UK residence requirements.

Resolve any overlapping dates

If you request a new visa for dates partly overlapping the old one, establish beforehand what will happen to the existing document. The German Embassy in the UK warns ↗ that applicants cannot hold several visas with the same or partly overlapping validity; cancellation may be required before or during the application. A Schengen visa is cancelled by the mission that issued it.

Explain both journeys and include a copy of the existing visa. Do not conceal it to obtain a convenient appointment. Where cancellation involves another country's visa, check the sequence with both competent authorities before making non-refundable purchases.

Prepare a new file and allow time

Compile current evidence for the new purpose: valid passport, UK status, itinerary, accommodation, funds and required insurance. An earlier visa can demonstrate travel history but does not replace up-to-date evidence.

Ask whether the centre will retain your passport and whether another overseas trip between submission and the decision is feasible. If you need the existing visa for an imminent journey, cancellation or temporary loss of access to your passport can prevent it. A booking in the system is not a decision on the new application.

Check both stickers after issue

Verify the new visa's starting date, the old visa's expiry and any cancellation marking. Do not enter before the new visa permits it. Make sure the documents cover the whole itinerary and return arrangements.

Visa and provider fees apply to the new category unless an exemption is available; previous payments do not automatically transfer.
