How to apply for an Austrian Schengen visa from the UK

Check your basis for applying

Start with the Austrian embassy in London ↗. Nationality determines whether you need a visa, while residence determines whether you can apply from the UK. For tourism, use the short-stay category C route where Austria is the appropriate destination country.

The embassy states that UK residence permission must remain valid for at least one month after leaving Schengen. Check your passport and UK status evidence separately: one document's validity does not substitute for the other's.

Book the designated centre

VFS accepts short-stay tourism applications in London, Manchester and Edinburgh; the embassy decides the application. Reach the booking system through the official embassy page. A national category D visa may follow another procedure, so a tourist appointment is not interchangeable.

Keep your confirmation and check biometric arrangements for every applicant. Do not pay an unofficial appointment seller for a supposedly guaranteed result.

Prepare a realistic itinerary

Use the current checklist covering the application, photograph, passport, UK status, purpose, accommodation, funds and insurance. The embassy accepts transport reservations; buying a paid ticket in advance simply for the application is not required. It is still sensible to check cancellation conditions.

Insurance must meet the territorial, date and medical cover requirements. If your own resources are insufficient and a host will fund the visit, check whether an Austrian Electronic Declaration of Sponsorship, or EVE, is needed. An informal letter from a friend is not the same document as a completed EVE.

Arrange payment and passport return

Check the applicable visa fee and separate VFS service charge before confirming the appointment. Choose optional services according to your needs. Your time allowance must cover appointment availability and passport return as well as examination.

Avoid scheduling another international journey on the assumption that the passport will return within a few days. When it comes back, compare the sticker with your personal details and itinerary. Report any error through the official channel before travelling.
