Applying for a Schengen visa while living in the UK

A UK residence permit does not by itself remove a Schengen visa requirement. First check the rules for your nationality, passport type and reason for travelling. A short-stay C visa is for temporary visits; moving, long-term study or employment may require a different permission. The European Commission explains the general application process ↗.
Choose the competent destination
Apply to the country that is your main destination. On an ordinary sightseeing trip covering several countries, this is generally where you will spend the longest time; for equal stays, apply to the country you enter first. Provide a clear itinerary showing dates and overnight stays. Flying through Paris before a longer holiday in Italy does not, by itself, make France responsible for your application.
Do not invent an itinerary to obtain an available appointment. Where your trip combines different purposes, check how the main destination is determined: a business meeting followed by a holiday may need a different assessment from a sightseeing tour.
Show that you live in the UK
Applications are generally made in the country where you are legally resident. Visiting Britain as a tourist is not equivalent to residence; an exception needs justification and acceptance by the consulate.
Use the current checklist specifically for applications made in the UK. For example, the Dutch checklist ↗ requests an eVisa printout and a letter containing your share code, with a specified remaining period of UK permission. Do not assume that every country uses that same period. Check that names and passport details match throughout your documents.
Prepare documents and book
Gather your passport, application form, compliant photograph, itinerary and accommodation evidence, financial information, UK ties and medical insurance. Children need additional documents. Check every item against the consulate's list, including originals, copies and translations.
Begin on the country's official website and follow its link to the appointed visa centre. Completing an online form does not mean that your application has been lodged: document submission, biometrics and payment are normally further steps. Allow for the period when the centre will retain your passport.
Allow time and budget properly
The usual application window opens six months before travel, with submission at least 15 days before departure. Normal processing takes 15 days but can extend to 45; waiting for an appointment comes on top. These periods do not guarantee a decision before your flight.
Budget separately for the visa fee, provider fee, insurance, translations and passport delivery. Exemptions depend on the application category. Check cancellation terms before incurring non-refundable costs. When your passport returns, verify the visa dates, permitted entries and length of stay.
