Check the model and history
Request label photographs, model number, approximate age, instructions and repair history. Search OPSS safety alerts and recalls ↗ and manufacturer notices. For a recalled item, do not buy without clear confirmation of an approved remedy.
Compare the price with a new item, including missing parts, delivery and cleaning. Without model identification, you cannot reliably check instructions or recalls.
Inspect the pushchair or equipment
Check the frame, fixings, brakes, harness, folding mechanism and completeness. Ask for a demonstration and ensure the configuration suits the child's age. Do not replace restraint components with improvised straps or fixings.
Sleeping products particularly require intact components, correct assembly and no homemade alterations. Lullaby Trust warns about adapting products beyond the manufacturer's intended use. Second-hand baby products ↗.
Treat mattresses and car seats separately
Lullaby Trust generally recommends a new mattress for each baby. If that is unavailable, its used-mattress criteria include firmness, flatness, no damage, correct fit, an appropriate waterproof cover and labelling. Check the complete list in its official guide ↗.
It recommends buying a new car seat: crash damage may be invisible, and wear also affects safety. Successful second-hand clothing purchases do not establish the safety of a car seat with an unknown history.
Arrange collection and first use
For an in-person purchase, agree inspection before final payment. Do not send an unknown seller a deposit solely because of urgency. Check the particular platform's buyer protection and keep messages and the listing.
Clean only as the manufacturer allows, assemble using its instructions and check before use. Obtain compatible missing parts from the manufacturer. If your budget is limited, ask a health visitor about a baby bank; verifiable support may be more useful than uncertain cheap equipment.
