Choosing a platform for selling personal second-hand items in the UK

Clothing, furniture, electronics and collectables need different audiences and delivery arrangements. Check permitted categories, payment, disputes and collection first. For example, Vinted publishes category restrictions ↗.
Large furniture may suit agreed collection, whereas a small branded item may benefit from a specialist audience. High overall traffic does not promise a quick sale. Compare completed transactions where available rather than only ambitious asking prices.
Calculate net proceeds
Deduct commission, promotion, packing, delivery and possible return costs. eBay has specific UK private-seller fees ↗: ordinary free selling has exclusions, limits and optional extras. Do not apply those terms automatically to business accounts or overseas transactions.
Delivery and buyer charges may make the purchaser's total higher than your listing price. This affects competitiveness. Improve photographs, category and description before automatically buying promotion.
Create an accurate listing
Photograph your own item, faults, labels and measurements. For electronics, specify model, condition, accessories and tested functions. Remove personal data before transfer using manufacturer instructions and retaining necessary backups.
Provide measurements and known limitations rather than calling visibly worn goods “like new”. Retain messages and dispatch evidence. Check carrier value limits and exclusions before shipping expensive items.
Safety and seller status
Avoid buyer-sent “receive payment” links. Verify funds in the official app or bank account; a screenshot is not settled money. Arrange a sensible collection location and any lifting help beforehand.
Disposing of personal possessions differs from buying regularly for resale. HMRC's additional-income checker ↗ helps identify the relevant route. Platform data reporting alone does not determine tax; trading requires separate consideration of seller obligations and records.
