Buying second-hand furniture and vintage homeware in London

A vintage display plate and everyday tableware need different checks. A decorative chest and a heavily loaded cupboard also cannot be selected only by appearance. Decide your repair tolerance, budget and delivery method.
Emmaus SLC lists second-hand and furniture shops ↗. Stock changes, so check a specific item before travelling. Yesterday's photograph does not mean it remains available.
Inspect the whole item
Check stability, joints, backs, drawers and hinges. Upholstery needs attention to fabric, odour, damp signs and relevant labels. BHF's condition criteria ↗ illustrate why condition and fire labels matter for upholstered pieces.
New covering does not prove the filling is sound. Ask about previous repairs and spare parts. Older electrical goods need appropriate safety assessment and servicing arrangements; an attractive casing is not evidence of working condition.
Add all costs
Include transport, stairs, cleaning, repairs and materials. A cheap large wardrobe may require expensive dismantling and rebuilding. Measure the delivery route, including stair turns, before buying.
Establish whether the seller is a trader or private individual, the condition description, return terms and transport responsibility. These arrangements differ. Avoid unexpected payment links presented as delivery confirmation and use the agreed payment channel.
Before using it
Photograph arrival condition and keep the listing. Choose cleaning and restoration for the material; harsh products may damage veneer, finish or patina. Seek specialist advice first for a valuable piece.
Do not use decorative old tableware for hot food without establishing suitability. Secure tall furniture appropriately. A successful purchase safely serves your purpose with understood total costs, rather than merely looking unusual.
