Where to turn after a collision or disputed parking notice

After a collision, prioritise safety

Call emergency services for immediate danger or injuries. Otherwise stop safely and record the location, time, vehicle registrations and circumstances. Photograph only where safe, including the wider scene, damage and signs.

GOV.UK ↗ explains the required exchange of details after an accident causing damage or injury. If details were not given at the scene, report it to police within 24 hours. Notify your insurer even if you do not intend to claim.

Send evidence to the right organisation

Provide the insurer with facts, photographs and witness information where witnesses agree. For a rented vehicle, follow the hire company’s procedure too. Avoid agreeing final compensation or signing an unclear admission of liability at the scene.

If cameras may have recorded events, ask the owner to preserve footage promptly. A footage request, police report and insurance process are separate actions. Keep reference numbers and submission confirmations.

Treat a parking notice separately

Identify whether the issuer is a council, police or private company. Even the abbreviation PCN can refer to different procedures. GOV.UK ↗ explains challenges and independent appeals; a private operator’s trade-association membership affects the route.

Photograph signs, markings, the payment machine, ticket or app screen. Check the registration, location, time and reason for the notice. An app problem, breakdown or collision needs evidence and does not automatically cancel a charge.

Deadlines and next steps

Follow the deadline on your actual notice. Do not delay a parking challenge while waiting for an insurer. Check whether a discount is preserved during a timely challenge; this depends on the procedure and stage. Read the effect of paying before doing so if you intend to contest it.

Keep correspondence and do not ignore formal letters, particularly court documents. Seek individual legal help for a complex dispute. Start with the correct recipient: police do not adjudicate every parking claim, and a parking operator does not determine collision liability.
