Where you can travel with UK residence status

Separate citizenship from residence

A UK eVisa proves your British immigration status. It is not a British passport and does not create a general entitlement to visit other countries without a visa. Rules depend on your nationality, travel document, purpose, duration and sometimes the exact UK permission you hold.

For each trip, make a short record of your passport, UK status, destination country or territory, dates, connections and purpose. Check it against the destination immigration authority or consulate. An old “countries you can visit with a BRP” list may miss both the switch to eVisas and subsequent rule changes.

Schengen and Ireland

A Schengen visa must be obtained separately where your passport requires one. Settled status alone does not replace it. Special rules can apply to family members of EU citizens; Your Europe explains the position of families living in the UK ↗.

Ireland does not grant every UK resident visa-free entry either. Its Short-Stay Visa Waiver Programme ↗ covers a limited list of nationalities and specified conditions for using certain UK short-stay visas. Long-term UK residence permission does not become an eligible short-stay visa. Northern Ireland is part of the UK; the Republic of Ireland is a separate country.

Check territories individually

Jersey publishes its own document requirements ↗. When visiting from the UK with a valid UK visa, another visitor visa is generally unnecessary, but your carrier's identification rules still apply. Arriving by another route or intending to work may produce different requirements.

Old Gibraltar advice is especially unreliable. The Government of Gibraltar announced new visa arrangements from 15 July 2026 ↗: previous exemptions linked to UK immigration status or a UK visa ended, with Schengen arrangements applying to visa-required nationals. Check the current instructions for your passport and itinerary.

Check proof of status and connections

Where a destination offers an exemption for holders of a particular UK visa or residence permit, examine the precise wording: temporary or permanent residence, remaining validity, previous use of the visa and acceptable evidence of an eVisa. Retain an official response if digital evidence is not clearly explained.

Check transit independently, especially airport changes and collecting baggage. Permission to enter the final destination does not automatically resolve transit requirements in a third country.

Prepare for your UK return

Follow GOV.UK's eVisa travel instructions ↗: link your current passport to your UKVI account and check your status before leaving. Obtain a travel share code if needed. It is not foreign entry permission.

Compare visa, transit and provider costs before buying tickets. At departure, both your destination documents and your basis for returning to the UK must be valid.
