Choosing a psychology foundation or conversion course

Establish your starting point

A foundation year usually prepares students for undergraduate study. A psychology conversion course is intended for graduates from other disciplines or those whose previous course does not provide the required UK psychology foundation. An introductory short course, conversion MSc and professional psychologist training serve different purposes.

If you already have a psychology degree, first establish whether conversion is necessary. Send the university your modules and results; recognition and entry requirements are assessed individually.

Understand accreditation

Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, or GBC, with the British Psychological Society is important for many subsequent psychology routes. For example, UCL’s Psychological Sciences MSc ↗ describes an accredited conversion course whose successful completion confers GBC. Check that statement for your intake rather than relying on a BPS logo in advertising.

GBC is not chartered psychologist status and does not automatically permit use of the title clinical psychologist. The HCPC explains protected professional titles ↗ and the registration required to use them. Professional practice can require further specialist training.

Compare the actual learning

Review research methods, statistics, the project, contact hours, academic writing support and full-time or part-time options. For a career change, understand the independent workload and the programmes available afterwards. Establish whether relevant experience is needed for the next stage and plan it separately.

Check first-degree, grade and English requirements. Documents may include transcripts, translations, references and a statement of motivation. UCL publishes its own requirements on the course page; these are not universal conditions for every conversion MSc.

Budget and decide

Compare tuition for your fee status, application charges, materials, travel and time away from paid work. Do not assume previous higher education has no effect on funding. Request deposit refund and deferral terms before committing.

Choose after checking the intended end route: research, HR and professional clinical training involve different next steps. A claim that one year will qualify you to practise as a clinical psychologist needs checking against the regulator’s requirements rather than the course advertisement.
