Changing careers in the UK using transferable skills

Moving sectors does not always mean starting from zero. Project organisation, customer work, data analysis, sales and people management can transfer to another role. However, the word manager appearing in two job titles does not make their requirements identical.
Collect several real vacancies in two possible directions. List daily duties, essential skills and entry requirements. The official skills-development guide ↗ distinguishes specific professional knowledge from transferable skills.
Provide evidence for the transition
Match each requirement to an example from previous work and explain it in the new sector's language. “Organised approvals across five teams” is clearer than an internal job title. Show your own contribution and the outcome without retrospectively enlarging the project.
Identify genuine gaps separately: a tool, sector regulations, English or mandatory registration. Interest in a subject and a short course do not establish readiness for regulated professional work. Check the employer's requirements and the relevant regulator where applicable.
Test the direction before buying a major course
Speak to several people doing the work about a normal week, difficult responsibilities and entry roles. Complete a small independent project, introductory module or suitable practical experience. A skills assessment ↗ can suggest ideas to discuss, but it does not choose a profession for you.
Compare direct entry, an adjacent role, on-the-job learning and further qualifications. Ask course providers about practical work, recognition of the certificate, total fees and the timetable. Do not buy a lengthy programme solely because its advertising promises a new career.
Build a transition plan
Set a minimum income, financial buffer, possible study period and review date. Keeping some current employment can be more practical than losing income and buying expensive training simultaneously. Include childcare, commuting and unpaid time in the calculation.
Prepare a CV for the new role, briefly explaining the transition and showing evidenced skills. Use official careers support ↗ and the course search ↗ to compare options. The initial plan should contain verifiable steps: examine vacancies, fill a particular gap, complete a project and begin suitable applications.
