Choose an actual role

Fashion is not a single occupation. Distinguish clothing design, prints and fabrics, pattern cutting, garment technology, production, buying and merchandising. Compare several vacancies and their everyday duties. The fashion designer profile ↗ explains design work; the textile designer profile ↗ covers fabrics and materials.

Choose one main role and one related option. If production and calculations appeal to you, an illustration course may not address the technical gap.

Show your process in a portfolio

Prepare a small set of complete projects: brief, research, sketches, material choices, technical development and outcome. Explain cost and manufacturing constraints for commercial work. Identify your own contribution to group projects.

Textile, clothing-design and buying portfolios should not be identical. Buying may need assortment analysis and commercial decisions; technical positions may require samples, precision and construction evidence. Match the material to the vacancy rather than following generic advice to make an attractive portfolio.

Choose training for the missing skill

Compare a short practical course, college, degree and apprenticeship. National Careers Service describes different routes, including assistant and technician positions. Request the syllabus, workshop hours, equipment access, entry requirements and final project.

Budget for fabrics, consumables, software and travel. View graduates’ work from the specific course. An overseas qualification does not make another multi-year degree automatically necessary; assess your existing skills and portfolio first.

Find initial experience

Check brand and manufacturer websites and specialist vacancies. UAL lists creative job and internship resources ↗. Some services are restricted to UAL students and graduates, so check eligibility.

Search assistant, trainee, technician and production-coordinator roles within your chosen specialism. Before an internship, clarify pay, duties, supervision and rights to your designs. Do not buy a course solely for promised industry contacts: request concrete examples of employer access. Track applications and improve your portfolio against recurring requirements.
