Models, background artists, performers and production crew enter through different routes. Decide whether you want to appear on camera or work in production, costume, makeup, editing or another department. ScreenSkills ↗ provides role information and free introductory screen-industry modules.
Read actual requirements for one role first. A broad television course does not necessarily prepare you for production-assistant or sound work.
Prepare the right application material
For modelling, follow each agency’s submission instructions. Images should show your appearance accurately, but the required shots and measurements must be checked on its website. Avoid buying an expensive portfolio before understanding those requirements.
An acting application may need a headshot, CV and showreel; a technical position needs evidence of relevant work. Describe skills honestly and identify your contribution to each project. Use a dedicated work email and check which application details become public.
Check agency terms and charges
Compare the website, legal name, agreement, verifiable projects and contact channel. Fashion and photographic modelling agency rules ↗ permit agreed commission but prohibit the relevant upfront work-finding fees.
Entertainment agencies have different rules ↗, including conditions for paid promotion. Neither “every commission is a scam” nor “registration charges are always normal” is a reliable rule. Request a written explanation of each charge and separate terms for additional services.
Build verifiable initial experience
Look at trainee schemes, employers’ own opportunities, BFI learning events ↗ and professional introductory resources. Schemes have age, location and other eligibility conditions; an information page does not mean applications are open.
Before a shoot, establish location, timing, duties, payment, travel expenses, cancellation terms and image use. Do not accept an unexpected change to the nature of a shoot on arrival. Guaranteed fame or an expensive compulsory package without clear terms warrants pausing payment and checking the offer. Measure progress through skills and completed work rather than the number of paid casting opportunities.
