A marketplace, consignment shop and immediate buyout offer different control over price and timing. Self-selling needs more preparation and communication. Consignment is a contractual sale arrangement, not necessarily payment on the day of handover. A buyout may be simpler but offer less.
Request written terms covering ownership before sale, storage, damage responsibility and recovery of unsold goods. A shop assistant's verbal promise does not replace an agreement with the actual business.
Authenticity and description
Collect receipts, purchase history, packaging and photographs of relevant details. Hide personal information. A receipt or serial number alone is not a complete authentication. Do not present personal assumptions as expert findings.

Calculate the payout
Compare proceeds after every charge. Vestiaire's official GBP update from March 2026 ↗ sets selling-fee thresholds and separate payment processing. Older promotional rates should not determine your calculation; confirm the amount when listing.
For shops, ask about percentage, minimum payout, permitted reductions and payment timing after sale. Establish whether prices can fall without your approval. Include cleaning and preparation only when worthwhile for net proceeds.
Handover evidence
Photograph condition, defects and packing before dispatch. Check whether delivery protection covers that type and value of designer item; general parcel cover can have exclusions. Keep acceptance records and the agreement.
Avoid moving transactions outside the platform for questionable commission savings. At collection, verify payment through your own channel rather than the buyer's screenshot. An attractive estimated price cannot compensate for unclear payouts or missing responsibility for the item.
