Can you buy melatonin and sleep aids without a prescription in England?

Читать на русскомMelatonin requires a UK prescription
Melatonin is a prescription medicine in the UK, even if another country sells it as a supplement. NHS information ↗ describes its use for particular sleep problems; children and some adults receive specialist prescribing.
Do not order an overseas product simply to bypass a consultation. Calling it a natural hormone does not remove side effects, interactions or the need for an appropriate treatment schedule.
What a pharmacy may offer
Some non-prescription sleep aids contain sedating antihistamines or herbal ingredients. The NHS ↗ explains that these do not resolve the cause of insomnia and are intended only for brief use, generally 1–2 weeks.
Tell the pharmacist your age, pregnancy status, medicines, alcohol use and whether you need to drive the next morning. Ask about next-day drowsiness and safe combinations. Do not independently combine several sedating products.
When to consult a GP
Book a GP appointment if problems last for months, changing your routine does not help or poor sleep makes everyday life difficult to manage. Prepare a short sleep diary showing bedtime, waking, naps, caffeine, shift work and symptoms.
Mention snoring with breathing interruptions, restless legs, pain, anxiety and recent medicine changes. Your GP will assess possible causes and may discuss cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia. A sleeping-pill prescription is not a required outcome of the consultation.
Make a practical plan
Choose a consistent waking time and discuss an evening routine. Do not drive while sleepy. If buying a temporary product, record the start and stop dates so that a short course does not become a habit.
An over-the-counter pack is paid at the pharmacy's price; a private consultation and medicine may be charged separately. For a sudden severe deterioration in mental health, use urgent NHS support ↗ rather than increasing the number of sleep tablets.
