Visa or ETA: checking UK entry requirements
Start with official requirements for your nationality, journey and purpose.
Describe your visit
Write down your nationality, residence, purpose of travel, intended length of stay and whether you will transit. Requirements depend on those details. A friend's experience or an old social post does not establish your eligibility.
Use the official checker
Use GOV.UK's visa checker, then read the conditions of the relevant visa or ETA route. Follow the official application links. An ETA is not interchangeable with a visa and does not authorise activities outside its conditions. Avoid assuming that a travel booking guarantees admission.
Before booking
Check documents, processing guidance and the provider's change or cancellation terms. Keep copies of your application and booking confirmations privately. Questions involving work, long-term residence or a complicated immigration history require advice appropriate to your circumstances.
