Reading Schengen visa dates, entries and the 90/180 rule

Read four separate restrictions

Check territorial validity, the From/Until dates, Duration of stay and Number of entries on the visa sticker. They apply together. A visa valid for two years does not permit two years of residence, and MULT does not remove the limit on days.

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs explains the sticker's fields ↗. For an ordinary short-stay C visa, you cannot enter before the starting date or remain beyond the expiry date, and must also respect the permitted duration. Check your name, passport number and any territorial exclusions as soon as the passport returns.

Count entries correctly

“1” permits one entry from outside Schengen, “2” permits two and MULT permits repeated entries. Moving between France and Germany within Schengen does not ordinarily use another entry. Returning to the UK and then going back does.

A UK–France–UK–Italy itinerary therefore requires permission to re-enter. Also account for visits to non-Schengen countries during a longer European journey. Check actual membership of the area, rather than assuming every EU country is in Schengen.

Check 90 days in any 180

For ordinary short visits, the calculation looks back over a moving 180-day window on each day of your stay. Days in all Schengen countries are added together; crossing an internal border does not reset the count. Both arrival and departure dates count as days of presence.

Enter all previous visits and your proposed dates into the official short-stay calculator ↗. If your sticker permits fewer days, that restriction applies too. A duration of 20 days, for example, cannot be ignored simply because the general ceiling is 90.

The calculator for short visits does not replace an assessment of residence under a D visa, a residence permit or applicable EU family rights. Those periods and legal grounds require separate checking.

First entry and main destination

The rule for selecting a consulate does not mean that every visa requires your first flight to land in the issuing country. The application must reflect your genuine main destination. France-Visas ↗ specifically describes entering through another country when France is the main destination.

If plans change substantially, keep honest explanations and updated bookings. Never use fictitious hotels to obtain a visa. Previous travel history alone does not guarantee a long multiple-entry visa next time.

Check before every journey

Review remaining days, entries, passport validity, insurance and current destination restrictions. Keep evidence of your itinerary, accommodation, funds and return to the UK. A valid visa does not guarantee admission at the border, and electronic recording of your travel does not increase your permitted stay.
