How to apply for a German Schengen visa from the UK

Start with jurisdiction and passport checks

The German missions in the UK ↗ divide London and Edinburgh jurisdiction by residence. Check your district before choosing a centre. UK residence does not give every nationality visa-free entry; British citizens generally do not need a visa for ordinary short tourism.

Germany must be the appropriate country for the real purpose and itinerary. A tourist Schengen visa does not replace permission needed for employment or a long stay.

Check the TLScontact waiting list

Short-stay applications go through TLScontact. Since June 2026, appointment waiting lists ↗ cover several categories in London and Manchester, including tourism and family or friends visits. Joining the list is not submission of a visa application.

Match your registration details to your passport. Once allocated an appointment, the published procedure requires payment of the service charge within 24 hours or the appointment is cancelled. Monitor notifications and current portal instructions. Other categories or centres may follow different arrangements.

Prepare documents in advance

Use the category C document requirements ↗. Evidence of UK residence must meet the validity requirements; passport, application, photograph, funds, itinerary, accommodation and insurance are checked separately.

For an invited visit, establish whether a formal undertaking from the host is needed. Match the evidence to the actual source of funding. Do not choose the wrong category for a shorter queue: applicants with incorrect categories may not be served.

Separate waiting from examination

Examination starts after submission and completion of the necessary procedures, rather than waiting-list registration. The visa page ↗ gives separate restrictions and timeframes for certain nationalities; a general 15-day promise is inappropriate.

Check the consular fee, TLScontact charge and passport return method. Avoid non-refundable arrangements based on an assumed appointment or approval. After issuance, inspect the sticker, especially any single-entry restriction and permitted duration.
