Establish whether another visa is needed

If you already hold a suitable valid Schengen visa, check its territorial scope, entries and remaining days. A new Hungarian sticker is not necessary for every separate journey. The Hungarian embassy in London publishes the rules ↗.

For a new application, Hungary must be the appropriate main destination. Applications from the UK are normally for UK residents; foreign nationality still determines visa requirements.

Ordinary tourists need an appointment

VFS Hungary UK ↗ accepts short-stay applications in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. Select the correct category and check the booking for every family member. Do not assume a spouse's appointment automatically includes another adult and children.

The embassy's Schengen walk-in arrangement is narrow: a specified category of family members of Hungarian citizens visiting family or friends. Separate walk-in hours for residence permits belong to a different procedure. Ordinary tourists need appointments; verify any claimed exception before attending.

Assemble a consistent application

Use the checklist for your category. Match your passport, UK status, application and photograph with evidence of purpose, accommodation, transport, funds and insurance. Where a relative pays, establish the required sponsorship declaration and financial documents.

Marriage to a Hungarian citizen and facilitated EU family rules based on free movement should not be treated as identical circumstances. Select the actual legal basis rather than the category requiring fewer documents.

Allow time and calculate the full cost

The embassy warns applicants to submit at least 15 days before travel and that examination can take up to 45 days. Add appointment availability and passport return to your plans; the minimum submission interval does not promise a visa by departure.

Check the applicable visa fee, VFS charge and optional services. Keep receipts and collection instructions. On passport return, check the sticker. Report errors through the official channel before travel, and use the procedure provided with the decision if appealing a refusal.
