A short-stay Schengen visa and a Portuguese national visa serve different purposes. For a brief visit, check requirements for your nationality on Portugal's government portal ↗. UK residence does not turn a foreign passport into a British one or create an independent visa exemption.
If Portugal is not your main destination, identify the competent consulate before booking. State your real itinerary in the application.
Your address determines the centre
Official VFS Portugal UK guidance ↗ distinguishes the London and Manchester consular districts. Check which centre can accept your application using your UK address; availability in another city does not override jurisdiction. The Manchester district is served by Manchester and Edinburgh centres.
Choose the tourist category and book through the official portal. Keep the confirmation; for several applicants, check every name and the family booking arrangements.
Match the current checklist
The general document checklist ↗ covers the application, passport, UK residence permission, itinerary and supporting evidence. For digital immigration status, provide the prescribed evidence, including a share code where required. Do not rely solely on an expired plastic card.
Prepare an explanation of the purpose and route, financial evidence, accommodation and insurance. Where another person pays or a child travels, consult the additional requirements for that situation. Check translation and copy formats before attending.
Plan your time allowance and payment
Portugal's government portal generally places submission between six months and 15 days before travel. This is an application window, not a guarantee that your passport will be ready within two weeks.
Check current visa and service fees and the conditions of any delivery option. Keep receipts and the tracking number. Do not select an incorrect category to obtain an available appointment. Once your passport returns, check the visa details and permitted days: issuance alone does not guarantee admission at the border.
