Start with Switzerland's UK guidance ↗. Nationality, travel document type and UK residence are separate checks. British citizens generally do not need a visa for short tourism, but this does not apply automatically to every UK resident with a foreign passport.
Certain British Travel Document holders have special conditions for Switzerland. If entering through another Schengen country, check that country's requirements separately: Switzerland's rules do not necessarily resolve entry through a neighbouring state.
Use VFS rather than an outdated procedure
The current authorised UK provider is VFS Global ↗. Older TLScontact instructions are not appropriate for a new booking. Swiss authorities warn that an application made through an unauthorised provider will not be valid.
Choose the short-stay category that fits your purpose. If no appointments are available, check the official portal again; the embassy states that requests for earlier appointments will not be answered. Do not buy a claim of special consular access from an unofficial intermediary.
Prepare the documents for your circumstances
Open the procedure and document requirements under Schengen visa ↗. Check your passport, UK status, form, photograph, itinerary, accommodation, funds and insurance. Private visits and tourism may require different accommodation evidence.
If the route includes a connection, establish whether you remain airside or cross the Schengen border. A flight between two Schengen airports may require an entry visa even when the final destination is outside Schengen.
Budget and plan passport availability
Check the applicable consular fee, basic VFS charge and any chosen extras. Keep your appointment confirmation, receipt and tracking number. Establish the return method and any requirements for collection by another person in advance.
Do not base another international journey on an assumed decision date: your passport may still be in the process. Once returned, check personal details, validity, permitted days and entries; report discrepancies through the official channel before departure.
